During the past decade engaging and developing the imagination has come to the forefront as essential to building more educated, just, and sustainable societies. This 7th International Conference on Imagination and Education continues to build on growing interest around the world in the role of imagination in teaching and learning not only in schools, but also in a wide variety of educational settings that include museums, outdoor and experiential venues, and new media applications such as on-line games and social networks.
This year, the IERG at Simon Fraser University again invites researchers, educators, practitioners, students, and policymakers to join us in continuing to shift the paradigms of theory and practice in education. We welcome proposals on a diverse range of research from our local and international community that includes but is not limited to:

We invite experienced academic researchers and practitioners as well as new researchers and practitioners to submit work that demonstrates innovative ideas in theory, practice, and curriculum development.
CONFERENCE SUBMISSIONS
Short and full papers
- Abstracts of up to 250 words are required for both short and full papers and are due February 14, 2009.
The short paper may have up to 2500 words. Presenters have 15 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions. The full paper may have up to 5,000 words. Presenters have 25 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions.
Workshops/Practical Applications/Demonstrations
- A two-page proposal plus a one-page description of how the presenter(s) will run the demonstrations are required by February 14.
Demonstrations are opportunities for sharing teacher development programs, curriculum packages, educational games, assessment and other projects that may consist of artifacts such as books, films, video and /or digital presentations, and require participation. Time available for demonstrations is in half hour blocks, i.e. 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Please include time for questions in your time block. NOTE: no commercial demonstrations for educational products will be accepted.
Panels
- An extended 500-word abstract is required by February 14
Panels provide the opportunity for a number of presenters (3-5) to explore one topic through presentation, discussion, and debate. These are not to be stand-alone mini-papers but rather a collaborative effort with the opportunity for a lively exchange of ideas that moves the topic forward. Submissions should make clear the focus of the discussion. 90 minutes is available for panel discussions.
Authors will be notified by March 30, 2009 of acceptance or rejection.
Online Proceedings:
Online Proceedings will be available prior to the conference and we encourage all presenters to submit their papers as soon as possible after acceptance. If a paper is not submitted for the online proceedings, the abstract will be included for reference. Papers will be accepted up to two weeks after the conference.
RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM SUBMISSIONS
- Full papers of up 6000 words are required by February 14.
Research Symposium papers should represent original work and clearly identify the contribution that the work is intended to make to the field. The Symposium provides an opportunity for researchers to share their ideas and engage in extended discussion with colleagues. Papers should not have been previously presented or published. Please provide an abstract of up to 250 words as the first paragraph of the paper. Author information should be included on a separate page.
A limited number of papers will be chosen for the Symposium. Papers that are accepted will be included in online proceedings and made available before the conference to all conference attendees. The goal is that everyone present at the symposium will start from the shared experience of having read the particular paper to be discussed. For each paper accepted, two respondents will be invited by the IERG to provide written responses (3,500 words); these responses will be shared with the author(s) prior to the conference.
Symposium Sessions: Authors will have 20 minutes to present a synopsis of their paper. Respondents will then have an opportunity to provide their comments, and up to an hour will be provided for questions and deepening discussions between the author, the respondents, and the audience.
Symposia sessions are scheduled concurrently with conference sessions. All conference delegates are invited to attend the discussions.
SUBMISSION FORMAT
Submissions are to be in 12-point Times or Times Roman, double-spaced, and aligned to the left margin. Margins are to be 1”. Pages are to be numbered at the bottom right. Bibliographies are not considered part of the work count. If English is not the author’s first language, it would be advantageous to have a fluent English speaker review the paper before it is submitted. The authors’ names, their academic or institutional affiliations, street addresses, email addresses, and website information must be clearly identified at the beginning of each submission. [For Research Symposium authors, whose papers are blind-refereed, this is a requirement only for final papers.] Please include, as a separate document, a brief biography of each of the authors. Submissions must be made electronically in .doc Word format or as a .pdf to the IERG website. Submissions arriving later, will, regretfully, not be accepted.
Authors will be notified by March 30, 2009 whether their paper is accepted, accepted with changes required, or rejected. Final versions of papers accepted for the Research Symposium must be submitted by May 30, 2009.
