The director of the LUCID project, Dr. Mark Fettes, was one of the
featured panellists on a two-hour CBC Radio forum on Friday, March
30th, focusing on the future of education in British Columbia.
The forum, moderated by BC Almanac host Mark Forsythe and held in
SFU's Wosk Centre for Dialogue, focused on themes identified by
participants in the Imagine BC project, including citizenship,
inclusivity, and community. Dr. Fettes contributed to the second of
these themes, offering an example from G.M Dawson Secondary on Haida
Gwaii of imaginative teaching that helped students connect more closely
with the community in which they lived.
The words "imagination" and "community" recurred in many
contributions to the forum. Several participants argued for arts-based
approaches to education, while others alluded to the importance of
listening to students and giving them a more active role in schooling.
While the time did not allow for a presentation of the principles of
imaginative education or the details of the LUCID project, it was
apparent that a great desire exists for practical yet visionary
initiatives along these lines.
