Masters of Education in Imaginative Education
Author: Kieran Egan. We have begun a new Master of Education degree program in Imaginative Education. This innovative program is partly on-line--during the Fall and Spring semesters--and also involves two summers in intensive courses for a three week period, during which students will attend the IERG conference and be able to interact with teachers and other scholars from around the world. Intake for our next Masters cohort ends in February. Please read below for more information!
The MEd program is based on two aspects of IERG's work. The first involves a detailed articulation of an alternative conception of education based upon principles of the work of Lev Vygotsky and other theorists of teaching and learning. The second aspect involves spelling out such theories in sufficient practical detail so as to enable educators to implement them in their everyday practice. It seeks to accomplish this by:
(1) presenting teachers with a set of new ideas about education;
(2) engaging them in the active reworking of subject matter so as to capture the learner's imagination;
(3) revising theory, training and educational practices to address more adequately the realities of educational curricula, classroom diversity, and teachers' working lives;
(4) and working with them to plan, implement and evaluate their use of these ideas.
The faculty members teaching in the program are all members of the IERG group. They are committed to working with educators in the study of their practice and in collaborating with them in bringing about more imaginative learning situations.
The program, which is cohort based, is six semesters long and consists of seven courses and a final comprehensive examination. The next Masters cohort will begin in September 2007. It will be based in Surrey. Students interested in the program are asked to email educgdpg@sfu.ca for more information. You may also click on "M.Ed.
