"Learning in Depth: A simple proposal that can transform schooling" is a special topic seminar offered by Dr. Kieran Egan based on one of his published papers and a soon to be new book.
The topic of the seminar is a proposal and project described in a new book with the same title as this seminar. The proposal is that during the first week of schooling each child will be randomly given a particular topic to learn about during her or his whole school career, in addition to the usual curriculum. Topics might be such things as apples, ships, dust, the circus, etc. The aim is that each child, by the end of schooling, will know as much about that topic as almost anyone on earth. The expectation is that this process will transform for most children their relationship to, and understanding of the nature of, knowledge. It is expected also to be a source of deep pleasure. The seminar will explore objections to the proposal and responses to the objections, criteria for suitable topics, plans for implementation, etc.

A brief paper about the topic, for pre-reading by the really keen or instead-of reading by the less keen, is available from egan@sfu.ca.
